Class Types

At Body Yoga we offer a number of different class types all of which are suitable for all levels.

Iyengar/Alignment Based Classes

Our Alignment Based Classes have a strong emphasis on the technical aspects of poses which are taught with a focus on detail, precision and alignment. Practising yoga in this way develops strength, mobility and stability. Students progress through classes and levels at their own pace moving from simple poses to more complex ones whilst also developing their mind, body, spirit connection.

Props, such as belts, blocks, blankets, chairs, bolsters and wall ropes are often used to help students perform the asanas (postures) correctly, thereby minimising the risk of injury or strain and making the postures accessible to both young and old as well as those with injuries or limitations (eg tight hamstrings, scoliosis, medical conditions).

Vinyasa Classes

Our Vinyasa classes are a more dynamic, flowing style of class where each pose flows gently into the next.  Whilst these classes are flowing, they are done at a pace that is accessible to everyone and where alignment and correct movement of the body is encouraged. The continual movement from one pose to the next encourages strength, stamina and flexibility as well as providing an added cardiovascular benefit.  Our Vinyasa classes are structured in a way as to accommodate both beginners and those with more experience. Students with injuries are advised to join our Alignment Based classes initially. Please always discuss any injuries or major health concerns with your teacher prior to commencing yoga.

Hatha Classes

Shanti yoga group classes are multilevel and are designed for students with varying levels of experience from beginners to seasoned practitioners. The classes accommodate beginner, intermediate, advanced and restorative levels, all within the same session.

Classes are fully led and consist of basic poses, principles of stretching, movement, breath and posture, yoga philosophy and simple relaxation in fluid, guided sequences, designed to offer a deeper, rhythmical flow of asanas, movements and breath, favouring the rich continuity of quiet, focused flow. This is a rare opportunity in our busy, noisy worlds, to cultivate personal tranquility, bring your mind inward and contribute to the quietness around you.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a slower paced style of yoga where poses are held for longer periods of time, usually around two to five minutes per pose. Yin Yoga is NOT Restorative yoga. Yin yoga targets the connective tissues of the body (tendons, fascia and ligaments) with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility, particularly around the hips, pelvis and lower spine. It is suitable for almost all levels of students and is the perfect complement to our Vinyasa classes. With its long holds in poses, Yin Yoga offers deep stretching which helps to free up energy as well as being more meditative which cultivates awareness and inner silence. Yin Yoga is suitable for all ages as well as during pregnancy and post natal.

Gentle/Restorative Yoga

This class is suitable for all levels and will include gentle, restorative poses as well as guided meditation and relaxation. Highly beneficial for those who have been unwell, recovering from adrenal fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, recovering from injury, prenatal students, post natal students or anyone who has a lot going on in life and just needs some time out to let go and be nurtured. Yoga works on not just the physical body but also the internal bodily systems, particularly the nervous system, so this class is a positive step to optimising your overall health and well being.

Meditation Classes

Our Meditation Classes are held on a monthly basis and are suitable for all levels of students including new beginners. Our Meditation classes offer a variety of relaxation and meditation techniques which are taught in a fun and supportive way. Body Yoga’s Relaxation & Meditation Classes will provide you with “life tools” as well as relaxation & meditation techniques that you can easily practice on your own allowing you to continue the journey to stillness and inner happiness.

Meditation improves emotional balance and provides tools to handle the many ups and downs of life.  There are a large number of physical, emotional and psychological conditions that are shown by research to be favourably influenced by meditation. These include:

Anxiety                                                  Chronic pain
Depression                                            Headaches
High blood pressure                             Insomnia
Migraines                                              Stress

Mums n Bubs Yoga Courses

These courses are ideal for new Mums and their bubs from as early as 6 weeks old (or 8 weeks if you have had a caesarean).  Our Mums n Bubs courses are for both Mum and baby with both having the opportunity to practise yoga as well as deep relaxation.  At Body Yoga, we hold the view that post natal yoga is about honouring what a woman’s body has created in the previous 9 months so we provide a safe environment for you, a NEW Mum (brand new or NEW for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc time) to find yourself again and slowly re-build your strength.  For bub, Yoga can help improve sleep patterns, digestion, constipation, colic, flexibility, strength and even settle a crying or unsettled baby.

Our Restorative Yoga and Yin Yoga Classes are also suitable for our post natal students who are looking for a class without bub.

Kids Yoga Classes

We provide Kids Yoga for children aged 5-11 years old. Our Kid’s Yoga classes are held in a relaxed and fun environment where every child is free to express their own individual self without judgement or expectation.  We provide a space free of competition, where all children feel safe and nurtured. Yoga builds confidence and self-esteem in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Improved flexibility and tools for coping with life’s ups and downs and just some of the many benefits of yoga for children.

Teens Yoga Classes

For those students graduating from the Kids Yoga classes or teens wanting to learn more about yoga and develop their own practice. A great way to help teens build self confidence in a non-competitive environment while giving them skills to help cope with the challenges of school, relationships and finding themselves in this busy world we live in. What a great journey for these teenagers to embrace yoga and develop healthy patterns, both in posture and attitude. Teen yoga helps students to explore the potential of their bodies, recognize their power to direct change, and notice the connection between mental attitudes and inner peace.
