Iyengar/Alignment Based Yoga

Alignment Based Classes

Iyengar yoga is characterized by the focus on precision and alignment, planned sequencing, timing and the use of props These methods were founded by BKS Iyengar, who was one of the most well-known and respected masters of yoga (passed away 2014, age 95). Iyengar’s life-long research on the actions and effects of the yoga postures has allowed the practice of yoga to become accessible to people of varying ages, levels of health, and fitness.

“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered
the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence.”
― B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life

Practice in class involves being given step-by-step instructions as well as the occasional adjustment by the instructor, to assist in the correct placement of the body within the posture. The use of props (such as blocks, bolsters, wall ropes) provides aid and support for when the full pose cannot be attained; for example, if the feet cannot be reached in a forward bend, a strap is placed around the feet and gripped. This type of modification allows one to work in the same way, and receive the same kind of health benefits, as the full pose. Furthermore, with consistent practice the muscles and joints will adjust and the body will become more open.

The class is guided in a non-competitive manner, allowing individuals to apply focussed effort and achieve gradual yet steady progress. Regular practice of Iyengar yoga is known to provide numerous benefits including:
• Improve strength, flexibility, balance, muscle tone and body awareness
• Help to correct postural imbalances
• Alleviate back, neck and shoulder pain
• De-stress the nervous system, benefit those with anxiety, chronic fatigue and depression
• Restore the body’s energy and boost your mood
• Facilitate the recovery of injuries and illness
• Calm the mind through the controlled use of the breath

“Yoga is about the will, working with intelligence and self-reflexive consciousness, and can free us from the inevitability of the wavering mind
and outwardly directed senses.”
― B.K.S. Iyengar

Our Alignment Based yoga classes are ideal for those who are new to yoga or have limited yoga experience and wish to learn the correct way to be in the poses.  It is advisable to commence at this level if you have only done a few classes at another yoga school, have practised with a DVD or are returning to yoga after a long break.  These classes are also suitable for pre-natal and post-natal students and their partners.

At Body Yoga, our classes run all year round and vary from week to week so you can start at anytime knowing you will always be learning something new. Progression in yoga is more important than perfection so students are encouraged to work at their own pace and listen to their body. Yoga is non competitive and non-judgemental and is very much an individual practice. You will always be supported in this practice with the guidance of our dedicated teachers.

Fees are not transferable or refundable.  Please see terms & conditions.

What to Expect

For at least a few weeks, you can expect to feel completely out of your comfort zone as you learn to tune into your body and your teacher. For a beginner, everything is new – new environment, teacher, other students, movement, breath, feeling in the body and the use of props. With focus and concentration the practice becomes easier and students will notice how quickly they learn and progress. In the beginning 1 class a week is enough, however twice a week is encouraged after the first 8 weeks have been completed for maximum benefit and continued progression.

Yoga is more than just a physical practice.  Students can expect all the benefits of a physical practice AND MORE!!!!! Yoga works on all of the bodily systems and organs so is an internal practice as well as a form of meditation – a “moving meditation”. Yoga has the ability to remove stress from our cells and teaches us how to deal with the ups and downs of life. In this way yoga, combined with healthy eating, can really transform our lives and allow us to be healthy, happy and at peace – valuable qualities for everyone.
